If you just watched the Outer Banks series finale and are still processing that brutal showdown in the middle of Hurricane Cassandra, you are not alone. It serves as the ultimate emotional payoff for Season 5, finally settling the score after JJ Maybank’s tragic murder in Morocco.
The confrontation brings Kiara Carrera’s season-long grief and quest for vengeance to a definitive close. Chandler Groff has spent the entire final season evading justice for killing his own son, surviving legal loopholes and attempting to eliminate anyone standing between him and the Royal Merchant gold.
Their violent collision on the open water is one of the most intense sequences the show has ever delivered, giving Kiara the justice she was denied earlier in the season. So how does Groff meet his end, and why did he kill JJ in the first place?
The Motive Behind Groff’s Betrayal

Throughout Season 5, Groff proves to be the most ruthless villain the Pogues have ever faced. He avoids criminal charges when the prosecutor fails to gather sufficient evidence for JJ and Hollis’s murders, allowing him to orchestrate another heist for the Royal Merchant gold while Hurricane Cassandra bears down on Kildare Island.
Before their final struggle on his stolen sailboat, Kiara demands the answer that has haunted her since Morocco: why did Groff murder JJ after his son had already surrendered the Blue Crown?
Groff’s confession exposes the sheer depth of his resentment. He admits JJ told him that the Pogues had things Groff would never have, sparking an uncontrollable envy over his son’s capacity for love and loyalty.
Groff was also driven by his own warped obsession with the Blue Crown, believing he could use its power to bring back JJ’s mother, Larissa, whom Groff had killed years earlier.

How Kiara Gets Her Final Revenge in the Finale

The finale removes any hesitation Kiara carried from their earlier encounter in Dubrovnik. Tracking Groff to Blackstone as the island evacuates, Kiara stalks him in the torrential downpour and leaps onto the back of his sailboat just as he departs into the storm.
A savage fight breaks out across the deck in the middle of crashing waves and thrashing sails. As Groff attempts to overpower her, Kiara turns the elements against him by lassoing a heavy rope around him and securing him directly to the mainsail rigging.
The immense weight of Groff causes the sail structure to collapse outward over the churning water. Without a second thought, Kiara cuts the line with her knife, plunging Groff into the ocean depths beneath the collapsed sail to drown.
The kill officially closes the darkest chapter in the Pogues’ lives. While Kie is forced to dump the heavy gold into the sea to keep the vessel afloat before being rescued by John B, Sarah, and Pope, Groff’s demise finally allows her to let go of her grief, rebuild the Maybank estate, and move forward.
Outer Banks Season 5 is now streaming on Netflix.
