Who Killed Hal Jordan? Breaking Down the Suspects in Lanterns

The series premiere of HBO’s dropped an absolute shocker. After spending most of its runtime in 2016 establishing the strained dynamic between veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and rookie (Aaron Pierre) in Rushville, Nebraska, the final minutes jump forward a decade to 2026.

John drives into a snowy Rushville to meet Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald), only to find his former mentor frozen solid in the high school stadium bleachers, and dead from a gunshot to the forehead, with his power ring missing.

With co-creator Tom King confirming Hal’s death in the 2026 timeline is real, the central murder mystery of the DCU is officially underway. Here are the prime suspects behind Hal Jordan’s murder.

1. Sheriff Kerry Kane

Kerry is the first person on the scene and the one who leads John directly to the body. She claims only she and the stadium groundskeeper know Hal is dead. That level of control over the crime scene immediately makes her suspicious, especially in a small town where local law enforcement often protects deep secrets.

2. William Macon

Played with sinister grit by Garret Dillahunt, the rancher leads an armed local militia convinced extraterrestrials are operating in Rushville. Macon serves as the primary earthly antagonist from the jump. His with alien activity makes him an obvious threat—or the season’s biggest red herring.

3. Zoe Macon

Secrets run deep in Rushville, particularly regarding Zoe Macon (William’s wife), who shares an entangled past with John Stewart. Over a ten-year gap, small-town rivalries and personal betrayals fester. If Hal uncovered something compromising involving the Macon family, Zoe could have pulled the trigger to protect herself.

Could Hal Jordan’s Killer Be Extraterrestrial?

During the premiere, John notes that fourteen known alien species can seamlessly mimic human anatomy well enough to bypass Earth technology. Coupled with early teases of the robotic Manhunters, predecessors to the Green Lantern Corps who can wear human disguises, the killer might not be human at all.

This raises an even bigger question: Is the frozen corpse actually Hal Jordan, or an elaborate construct designed to hide what really happened to Sector 2814’s greatest ring-bearer?

Hal’s ring was stolen before his body froze, creating two separate investigations: who pulled the trigger, and who took the weapon?

With Nathan Fillion’s confirmed to be wielding a power ring in the broader DCU timeline, the weapon’s journey from a Nebraska football stadium to the wider galaxy will likely serve as the bridge connecting the 2016 and 2026 timelines across the season.

Lanterns airs weekly on HBO and streams Sundays on Max.
