episode one is out on HBO, and fans are already untangling a structure that jumps a full decade between scenes. If you finished the first episode wondering how a 2016 buddy story turns into a 2026 murder investigation, you are not alone.

The show follows Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and (Aaron Pierre), two Green Lanterns pulled into a case in the fictional town of Rushville, Nebraska. What starts as a grounded crime drama, closer to True Detective than a cosmic space opera, quickly reveals itself as something stranger once the timeline splits.

The season is built around two timelines, a 2016 thread in which Hal trains John, and a present-day 2026 investigation set roughly a year after the events of and Peacemaker Season 2. The 2016 material follows a younger John learning the ropes from Hal after an unexplained mass shooting in Rushville, the kind of case Hal is convinced has extraterrestrial roots.

Picking up a decade later, the 2026 segment follows a seasoned John as he reinvestigates a case in the same town. Showrunner Chris Mundy explained to The Ringer that the dual timelines purposefully explore themes of inheritance, replacement, and our control over the past.

That thematic doubling is why the timelines never feel like a gimmick. The 2016 flashbacks are not just backstory. They are the mystery’s engine, feeding directly into what John is chasing ten years later.

The premiere ends with the kind of gut punch that makes the dual structure click into place. A timeskip from 2016 to 2026 closes out the pilot, revealing an older John Stewart finding Hal’s frozen dead body sitting in the football bleachers at the same crime scene from earlier in the episode.

That death immediately reframes everything before it. Every 2016 scene of Hal training John now plays like a countdown. And it raises the obvious question fans are chasing into episode two: what actually happens to Hal between the two timelines, and why does his body turn up exactly where the show’s central mystery began?

There is also a wider DCU wrinkle here. In the 2016 timeline, Hal tells John he is the only human , meaning John’s training predates Nathan Fillion’s , who became a Lantern sometime between 2016 and 2025. By the time Hal dies in 2026, Guy is already active, which lines up with his cameo pulled straight from Superman.

For a show built on two clocks running at once, that is the whole point. The 2016 timeline explains how John became the Lantern he is. The 2026 timeline shows what he is forced to become without Hal beside him. Every flashback from here on out is going to feel like it is racing toward that bleacher scene, and Lanterns clearly wants viewers watching every second of it.

Lanterns airs new episodes Sundays on HBO, with the season set to run through its October 4 finale.
