But five episodes in, it’s getting harder to ignore how much this woman actually knows, and how little the show has explained about why.

That running joke has done a lot of heavy lifting to hide how central Fran actually is to the story, and how much she seems to know about the darker truth behind Mimi’s immortality.

The source manga is also explicit that Fran is a trans woman, which the anime has carried over into her design without making it a direct plot point onscreen.
What Is Fran’s Endgame?
Here’s where things get heavier. Mimi is immortal because someone cast a sacrificial revival spell to bring her back from death, a spell that requires trading one life to save another.
According to the manga, the life traded for Mimi’s was her own mother’s. Episode four finally lets that detail surface in the anime, and it’s Fran who ends up walking Sheena through how Mimi’s mother died, specifically to bring her back as an unkillable weapon.
That is not the kind of detail a school nurse just happens to know. Fran’s familiarity with the exact mechanics of Mimi’s revival, paired with an earlier scene where Mimi tells Fran that Sheena’s smell reminds her of “Mama,” only for Fran to claim she doesn’t understand, suggests Fran’s connection to that event runs deeper than the show has spelled out.
Whether Fran was involved in casting the spell, knew Mimi’s mother personally, or is protecting Mimi from a truth she’s not ready to hear remains an open question the anime hasn’t answered on-screen.
What is clear is that Fran’s storyline is tied directly to the show’s central mystery: what Mimi actually is, and what it costs to make her that way. As the series keeps peeling back the academy’s justifications for turning orphans into weapons, Fran looks increasingly like the character who’s been sitting on the ugliest piece of that puzzle the whole time.
