Billie Eilish is set to make her feature film acting debut in The Bell Jar, a new adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s 1963 novel of the same name. Rather than appearing in a supporting role or cameo, Eilish will lead the film as Esther Greenwood, the story’s central character.

Hollywood has attempted several modern adaptations of The Bell Jar, but none reached production. In 2007, Julia Stiles was attached to star and produce a new adaptation, but the project stalled without financing before the rights expired.
Another attempt followed in 2016 when Kirsten Dunst planned to make her directorial debut with Dakota Fanning cast as Esther Greenwood. That project was ultimately abandoned before filming began. A planned Showtime limited series starring Frankie Shaw also failed to move forward.
The current adaptation has gone further than any recent attempt. Production officially began filming in Toronto in June 2026 under Sarah Polley’s direction. Although the film has not yet received an official release date, cameras are now rolling, making it the first major modern adaptation of The Bell Jar to reach production.
