Back in Chapter 35, Boruto let Sarada get captured on purpose, which alone tells you how much this version of him has changed since the timeskip.
Code had been leaving Claw Marks scattered around Konoha during the Mamushi fight, so the idea was simple enough on paper. Let Code grab Sarada, let him move her straight to the Divine Tree hideout, then use a set of kunai marked with traces of Boruto’s own chakra to teleport in right behind her the second she lands. Clean plan, at least on paper.
It only works if the guy on the other end isn’t paying attention to small details, and that’s exactly where it falls apart, because Code notices everything, always has.
Code Shuts It Down in About Two Panels
He picks up on the chakra signature almost instantly, before Sarada’s even fully in his grip. Instead of routing her through the Claw Mark the whole plan depended on, he rips the markers off her arm with his mechanical hand and forces her toward a different Claw Mark entirely, one Boruto has zero way of tracking. And that’s it.
The infiltration plan is dead before it even really started. No dramatic struggle, no big reveal, Code just quietly takes the trap apart like it barely registered as a threat to him in the first place.
What sells the twist is how the chapter sets it up beforehand without you clocking it while reading. Boruto goes in calm. Prepared. Nothing like the kid who used to charge in without a plan and figure it out later, mid-fight, usually badly. That kind of quiet confidence in a manga chapter is almost always foreshadowing for something going wrong, and a fair number of readers online called this exact outcome before the chapter even dropped, which says a lot about how predictable Code’s competence has become at this point in the story.
Koji Watches It Fail in Real Time
There’s a second layer here that makes the whole thing sting more than it should. Amado had just finished messing with Koji’s brain to shorten the gap between his precognitive visions, and the very first thing that the upgrade shows him is Boruto’s plan collapsing as it happens in real time.
Koji warns him not to teleport, except that by the time the warning actually lands, the markers are already gone, and there’s nowhere left to go anyway. Rough timing, honestly. Boruto built this entire rescue attempt around trusting Koji’s foresight, and the one time it actually catches up in time to matter, all it does is confirm the plan has already failed instead of preventing it.
Why This Actually Matters Going Forward
This isn’t just a bad afternoon for Team Boruto; it’s a real shift in how this fight is being written. Code isn’t reacting to Boruto anymore. He’s a step ahead on purpose now, and that’s a different dynamic than the one this arc opened with, back when Boruto still had the element of surprise working in his favor.
It also takes away the one real advantage Boruto had going in, knowing exactly where Sarada would end up, which means whatever comes next has to be built from nothing at all.
Between Kawaki’s mission, Amado quietly working toward reviving his daughter, and Koji’s vision hinting that Momoshiki might be back in the picture soon, this failed teleport might end up being the smallest problem sitting in this chapter. It just happens to be the one that hits first, and probably the one fans will keep talking about until chapter 37 drops.
