Hunter x Hunter Chapter 414, titled ‘Comrades’, arrived as the Succession Contest aboard the Black Whale tips into open warfare. Buried inside the political chaos is a new Nen ability that immediately became the chapter’s biggest talking point.
First Prince Benjamin is about to enforce Special Martial Law, and the chapter opens with one of his soldiers, Kanjidol, killing a guard loyal to Seventh Prince Luzurus. Luzurus gets word that Benjamin’s forces are massing outside the late Ninth Prince Halkenburg’s old room, and rather than fight a losing battle, he orders his guards to stand down and has incriminating evidence cleared out before anyone searches his quarters.
What is King of Men, Hunter x Hunter Chapter 414’s New Nen Ability?
Chamashi activates a semi-coercive Manipulation-type ability, currently translated as King of Men, that grants a willing recipient full invincibility for as long as physical contact is maintained.
However, it is not a permanent shield. Once the effect ends, the protected person is forced into Zetsu for 100 times the length of the protection, and once that Zetsu period runs out, they take recoil damage equal to a third of whatever the ability absorbed.
There is one more catch that keeps it from being a true cure-all. The ability cannot block damage from attacks where multiple Nen users combine their efforts, meaning a coordinated assault can punch straight through it.
Why Does King Of Men’s Steep Cost Matter For The Succession Contest?
The ability fits the pattern Togashi has leaned on throughout the Black Whale arc, where the strongest tools always come with a punishing downside. King of Men is not built to be thrown around casually. It exists for the rare moment where surviving the next few seconds matters more than the extended vulnerability that follows.
That tradeoff is exactly why the chapter’s final pages hit as hard as they do. After a long absence from the main story, Gon and Killua make their return, right as Kurapika keeps digging into Beyond Netero’s curse and its possible link to Prince Woble.
Chapter 414 closes without answering how any of these threads connect, but it sets up several of the series’ biggest players for a collision that has been building for a long time
