The director behind one of the most acclaimed slow-burn mysteries in recent anime history just pivoted to something nobody saw coming. And once you hear the premise, you won’t be able to unsee it either.
Norihiro Naganuma spent years building a reputation on meticulous court intrigue and quiet character work as the director of The Apothecary Diaries. That show turned patient, methodical storytelling into must-watch television, earning him a dedicated fanbase who trusted his eye for detail above almost anything flashy. So when word broke that Naganuma was stepping into original action for the first time, expectations were already high.
Nobody expected this particular original, though.
‘Jurassic Shadows’ Reveals Ninjas vs Dinosaurs Premise at Anime Expo 2026
Naganuma unveiled Jurassic Shadows during his own panel at Anime Expo 2026 on July 4, alongside a first promotional trailer and concept visual. The synopsis is set in Tokyo in 2029, where dinosaurs thought to be wiped out by the asteroid impact actually survived by passing their DNA into humanity through interbreeding. Hidden among ordinary people, they now prey on humans while living unnoticed in society.
Standing against them is a covert order of ninjas who wield Ryugesho, a special pigment infused with ancient memories. Applying the pigment awakens dinosaur powers within the wielder, letting them fight back against the predators threatening humankind. It’s a full collision of prehistoric horror and shinobi tradition, with a distinctly modern beauty industry twist baked into the power system.
The project reunites much of Naganuma’s Apothecary Diaries crew. Yukiko Nakatani returns as character designer, working from original character concepts by Yoichi Amano. Misato Aita handles color design, Shoji Hata is back as sound director, and Kenta Ihara (Saga of Tanya the Evil) is writing the screenplay. Yusuke Takeda of Bamboo, known for his art direction on Chainsaw Man, joins as art director, while Shuhei Mutsuki (Lycoris Recoil) composes the score.
Animation production falls to Cannon Code, marking the studio’s first major project, with Slow Curve and Avex Pictures Inc. developing and producing. A manga adaptation is also confirmed for serialization at Kodansha, though platform and launch details haven’t been announced.
No release date, streaming platform, or voice cast has been revealed yet. But between Naganuma’s pedigree and the sheer audacity of the pitch, Jurassic Shadows is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about original announcements to come out of Anime Expo 2026.
