The development of the sequel to ‘The Princess Diaries’ movie trilogy is ongoing in Disney studios, but it hasn’t been shot yet, as Anne Hathaway’s tight schedule postpones it. Author Meg Cabot announced this in her speech at BookCon 2026 on April 19, offering the audience a realistic update on the long-awaited movie.
“I don’t know when they’re going to film it because Anne Hathaway is making a million movies right now,” Cabot said. “But one of these days she’s going to go to the castle that we have actually rented and is sitting there waiting.” This fact alone proves that the project is very close to release, despite the cameras not having started shooting yet.
The continuation of the story set in Genovia will be realized soon
According to Disney Studios, all creative positions for ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ are already filled. Adele Lim, famous for ‘Joy Ride’ and ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ will direct the project. Moreover, producer Debra Martin Chase, who was responsible for the first two movies in the series, will continue to work on the project.
Hathaway will join the team as a producer through her company, Somewhere Pictures. The screenplay, written by Flora Greeson, doesn’t start a new story. It is connected with the previous part of the saga and continues it.
Hathaway announced her participation in the sequel earlier. “Miracles happen. Back to Genovia… The fairy tale continues,” she said. Thanks to this post, rumors became confirmed: the sequel exists. Fans of the story have been seeking information about the continuation of Mia’s journey for almost two decades since the release of ‘The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.’
At the moment, the only issue is the timing of its filming. Hathaway’s current projects include ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ ‘Verity,’ and ‘Flowerdale Street.’ These commitments delay ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ but allow some pre-production work to proceed.
