Sea of Thieves is heading to the big screen, and the name attached to it is one fans of a certain Marvel film will recognize immediately.
Rare’s pirate sandbox has been one of Xbox’s most enduring live service games since its 2018 launch, attracting over 40 million players by 2024. The game has no traditional protagonist, no set story, and no single narrative arc. It’s built entirely around crews, chaos, and the open ocean. That makes it one of the more unconventional video game properties to adapt for film, but Xbox isn’t slowing down.
Destin Daniel Cretton Is Producing the Sea of Thieves Live-Action Film
Confirmed as part of Xbox’s sweeping Entertainment Weekly cover story, the Sea of Thieves live-action movie is now in early development with Destin Daniel Cretton attached as producer through his company, Hisako Films.
Cretton directed both Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day for Marvel. A director for the Sea of Thieves project has not yet been announced.
Xbox head of content Matt Booty addressed the biggest challenge the adaptation faces head-on.
“The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community,” Booty told Entertainment Weekly. “So if you sit down to think about Sea of Thieves, it’s not, ‘Who are the main characters? What’s the plot?’ It’s a super social game, but there’s a tone to Sea of Thieves. It’s built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that’s going to be like.”
The announcement is part of a much larger push from Xbox into Hollywood. The same EW feature confirmed a live-action Gears of War movie at Netflix directed by David Leitch, a live-action Wolfenstein series at Amazon, and a Fallout Shelter reality competition show now actively filming. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has made no secret of her ambitions, stating her goal is to make Xbox the number one gaming and entertainment company by 2030.
No release date or plot details for the Sea of Thieves film have been announced yet.
