At the Amiens Comics Festival in France this month, the Fairy Tail creator was asked point-blank whether Natsu and Lucy are a romantic couple. Mashima confirmed that the two are definitely more than just friends, acknowledging that their feelings for each other go beyond a standard friendship. But he didn’t stop there, and his full answer is what has fans talking.

The quote making the rounds is a careful one. Mashima stated that while he did say they are more than friends, he also means less than lovers, adding that he might make it official if he changes his mind in the future, but right now, there is nothing in particular like that.
“I did say they are more than friends, but i also mean less than lovers, I might make it official if i change my mind in the future, but right now there is nothing like that in particular,” he said.
It’s a deliberately open answer, and it tracks with how Mashima has handled this question for years. When asked about the Natsu romance situation at a previous convention, he admitted he had originally imagined a love triangle between Natsu, Lisanna, and Lucy, but ultimately decided to leave Natsu’s love life unresolved because he felt whichever way he went, fans would push back.
That history makes this new statement feel significant. Mashima is no longer dodging the question entirely. He’s placing Natsu and Lucy in a defined space, just not one with a label attached yet.
The timing adds even more weight to the conversation. Mashima recently announced a new short-term serialization titled Fairy Tail: Re Fantasia, set to launch July 29, 2026, continuing the story of Natsu, Lucy, and the Fairy Tail guild. With a new chapter of the story just weeks away, fans are now reading this statement as a hint at where things could finally be heading.
For a fandom that has been shipping NaLu since the early 2000s, “more than friends, less than lovers” is both a validation and a tease. Mashima knows exactly what he’s doing, and he’s leaving the door open just wide enough.
