Ridley Scott is trading empires and battlefields for a single airfield, a dog, and the last people left standing. The Dog Stars lands in theaters this Friday, and it’s shaping up to be one of the director’s quietest, strangest films in years.
The movie is 20th Century Studios’ adaptation of Peter Heller’s 2012 bestseller of the same name, with a screenplay by Mark L. Smith. Where Scott’s last few projects leaned into sweeping historical scale, this one strips things down to a survivalist two-hander set almost entirely in a broken Colorado. That contrast is exactly what’s making the buildup so interesting.
Jacob Elordi leads the film as Hig, a civilian pilot who survived the pandemic that wiped out most of the planet. Josh Brolin plays Bangley, the ex-Marine who helped him carve out a fragile, functional homestead. Everything changes when a mysterious radio transmission convinces Hig there might be more out there worth risking his life for.

Margaret Qualley plays Cima, the woman Hig eventually finds after following that signal, and the trust between them forms fast. Guy Pearce’s character is far more guarded, operating by a harder rule set about outsiders. As one line from the marketing puts it, he treats Hig as an unknown, and their group has rules about how to deal with unknowns.

“I cast intuitively. I never questioned Jacob and Josh, with Margaret and Guy Pearce. They’re absolutely born for this,” he said.
Brolin has talked about Scott’s hands-on process on set, including moments where the director sketched out shots on the spot that matched almost exactly what ended up on screen. Elordi has described Scott’s ten-camera setup as unlike anything he’s worked with before, watching multiple feeds from a trailer and essentially editing in real time.
What makes The Dog Stars worth watching closely is how far it sits from the last stretch of Scott’s filmography. This isn’t a war epic or a courtroom drama dressed in period costume. It’s a smaller, meaner story about whether connection is even worth the risk once the world has already ended, and that question carries real weight with a cast this stacked behind it.
