Cassie Howard’s Euphoria Season 3 arc was one of the most talked-about storylines on television this year, and Sydney Sweeney is finally explaining how she really felt about bringing it to life.
In a new Vanity Fair interview, Sweeney reflected on her character’s arc in the final season, in which Cassie becomes a model on an OnlyFans-style subscription platform after marrying Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi. The storyline generated enormous conversation from the moment the Season 3 trailer dropped, and Sweeney’s candid responses make it clear she went in with her eyes wide open.

Sweeney revealed that creator Sam Levinson walked her through the direction early, and that she understood it immediately through the lens of who Cassie has always been.
“From the very beginning, you can see that Cassie has this need to be loved,” she said. “She has a need to be validated by other people. She doesn’t know how to love herself unless someone else loves her. So I understand how Sam got her to where she was in Season 3.”
On whether she personally agrees with the choices Cassie makes, Sweeney was direct. When Levinson asked how she felt about the storyline, she told him: “Look, I’m playing a character. Do I agree with all of Cassie’s decisions? Would I personally make these choices? No, of course not. But I’m an actor and that’s my job.”
The scripts included Cassie turning to online sex work after Nate fell on hard financial times, with her ex-best friend Maddy, played by Alexa Demie, helping her build what became a small OnlyFans empire. It’s a chaotic endpoint for a character who started Season 1 as a lovesick high schooler desperate for the right kind of attention.
Sweeney also revealed that the cast had no full view of the season during production, with actors only receiving their own scenes from the scripts. That meant even Sweeney was piecing Cassie’s full story together as filming progressed.
For a character who spent three seasons chasing love in all the wrong places, Cassie’s ending makes a painful kind of sense. Sweeney clearly understood that from day one.
