Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey has fans buzzing about more than just its IMAX 70mm spectacle. With the film now in theaters and pulling in massive numbers, attention has turned to what its stacked cast actually got paid, and Anne Hathaway‘s number is all over the place depending on who you ask.
Hathaway plays Penelope, the resilient wife of Odysseus who spends a decade fending off suitors while waiting for her husband to make it home. Most reports place Hathaway’s paycheck somewhere between $4 million and $5 million. A few outlets have pushed that figure as high as $7 million, putting her ahead of Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron in some breakdowns.
Either way, it lands well below what Matt Damon reportedly earned as the lead at $15 million, and behind Tom Holland’s estimated $10 million and Zendaya‘s reported $5 million to $8 million for playing Athena.
For context, Nolan has a track record of asking A-listers to take smaller upfront paydays on his biggest swings. During Oppenheimer, stars like Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. reportedly accepted base salaries of around $4 million, well below their usual rates, with the expectation that box-office success would make up the difference through backend deals.
Nolan himself is said to have negotiated $20 million upfront for The Odyssey plus a cut of the film’s gross, so a similar structure for his cast wouldn’t be surprising.
