John Stewart ended the Lanterns finale as Earth’s Green Lantern, and a hint buried in the season suggests he’s far more powerful than the show let on. Showrunner Chris Mundy now says that idea could shape what comes next, and with season 2 in early development, the writers are already working on it.
Lanterns Season 2 Could Expand on John Stewart’s Ring-Free Powers

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mundy was asked about the season’s early suggestion that John is a prodigy who can maintain constructs even without a ring. EW asked whether that’s a bigger idea the writers want to explore.
Mundy said it is, and he pointed to the Halogram as a possible way in: “I think it’s a really cool idea that’s ripe to be used, especially if you consider things like, if John was thinking about him, the Halogram would pop back up and he’s like, ‘It’s your subconscious. You’re the one.'”
However, he didn’t give specifics. “I have no specifics to give you, but I think the idea of it is interesting,” he said. “Any idea or notion or whatever that came up in season 1 is fair game to expand on if it goes forward.”
There’s no plot detail, but the writers clearly see this as an open thread. It also fits the finale as John reclaims Hal’s ring on his own terms, and the idea that his power may not depend on the ring adds a layer to that choice.
Mundy also addressed how fragile John’s position is. John ends the season as Green Lantern of Earth, but Mundy says he’s “more or less blackmailing the Guardians at the moment,” which he calls “both an empowered and precarious situation all at once.”
I think that’s where the power question gets interesting. A Green Lantern who works outside the Guardians and may not need his ring in the usual way is a problem for the Corps. Season 2 can build on that tension, and the writers may be already working on it.
