Netflix is set to release the highly anticipated limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel, East of Eden, on October 1, 2026. The multi-generational drama stars Florence Pugh as the complex and notorious Cathy Ames, alongside Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as Charles Trask.
Florence Pugh Calls East Of Eden’s Cathy As The Hardest Character She’s Ever Played
Tackling a character described in Steinbeck’s text as a remorseless, cold-blooded monster required Pugh to construct a meticulous ritual to get inside her headspace. Rather than relying solely on the script, she built a complete sensory world to embody Cathy’s chilling detachment.
“It’s like probably one of the hardest characters I’ve ever played, so I feel very protective of it,” Pugh revealed during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
To anchor herself into the late-19th-century mindset, she turned to unconventional methods, including finding an exact scent to define Cathy’s presence.
“I find perfumes for every one of my characters,” Pugh explained. “I go and buy a perfume that is their smell, and they’ll be smells I would never buy as me. I found this beautiful perfumery in New Zealand called Curionoir, and I found an amazing smell for her.”
Beyond fragrance, Pugh leaned on auditory triggers to transition into Cathy’s darker impulses during production.
“I’d make playlists based off the different characters and the different vibes,” she shared. “It would really help me get into certain scenes, ’cause there’s quite some hard scenes in the series.”
To capture the physical and historical realities of the women living during that era, Pugh also unearthed rare visual archives.
“I found an amazing photography book from a photographer that took pictures of prostitutes during that time, it was like a private kind of collection. All of these little pieces really gave me an idea of who she was and what it was like to live in that time.”
Adapted from John Steinbeck’s monumental 1952 novel, Netflix’s East of Eden reimagines the multigenerational Salinas Valley tragedy as an expansive, sweeping limited series.
The project holds deep personal roots for writer and showrunner Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the legendary 1955 film starring James Dean. Pugh boarded the project early in 2020 as both star and executive producer after connecting with Kazan over Zoom.
