Charles Spencer Sends a Stern Warning to Buckingham Palace
Addressing the inevitable palace pushback over his unflinching account of Diana’s marriage, mental health, and the behind-the-scenes machinations of her 1997 funeral, the Earl made it clear that he deliberately held back damaging revelations about his former brother-in-law, now King Charles III.
“I’m sure Buckingham Palace will criticize me for putting anything about the King in the book,” Spencer told People. “They should just be very grateful I didn’t put what I know about him in it. This is correct in terms of the story of Diana’s life that I’m portraying. If I wanted to write a scandalous book about Prince Charles or King Charles as he is now, it would really be a jaw-dropper. But I’m not here to do that.”
Spencer outlined how his detachment from the institution allows him to speak without fear of royal retaliation. Viewing the reigning monarch merely as an estranged relative rather than an untouchable sovereign, the Earl underscored that the ties between them have long severed.
“I see him as an ex-brother-in-law, and I have really nothing to do with him at all now,” Spencer explained. “Both his sons are middle-aged… and you know, I don’t have anything to do with him. I mean, I’ve seen him at family weddings or whatever. And I mean, that sounds very dismissive, but he’s just not part of my life, and I’m not part of his.”
By keeping his primary focus on honoring Diana’s legacy and protecting her historical record, Spencer sent a distinct signal to palace courtiers that any attempt to discredit his account risks opening the door to the secrets he chose to leave out.
