It is easy to write Harry off as a merciless enforcer whose sole compass points to Conrad Harrigan. But ahead of MobLand Season 2, Tom Hardy is dismantling that reputation, revealing that what keeps his character tied to the syndicate runs far deeper and darker than blind devotion.
Tom Hardy Reveals Harry’s True Motive
Speaking alongside co-star Joanne Froggatt about the shifting dynamics and shocking turns in the Season 2 premiere, Hardy directly challenged the popular perception that his character is driven by simple, unyielding loyalty to criminal patriarch Conrad.
While Janine serves Harry with divorce papers largely due to his devotion to the crime family, Hardy believes fans have fundamentally misread what keeps Harry tied to the syndicate.
“The interpretation of loyalty is interesting,” Hardy explained. “Because I think he’s also loyal to Janine. I think he’s loyal to Gina. I think he’s loyal to himself. I think he’s loyal to Conrad in his own way. I think he would be done with Conrad when the natural time slips and run with someone like Kevin.”
Hardy was quick to shut down the belief that Harry acts like a devoted servant waiting to die alongside his master’s empire.
“It doesn’t strike me as somebody who has an innate dog-like [loyalty]… like Firs in The Cherry Orchard,” Hardy said. “Firs is the servant, isn’t he? And then he lays down with the house and dies at the end when they all leave the house. I don’t think he’s the eternal servant that we imagine that he is, and I certainly don’t think he’s aspirational and ambitious to be a king.”
Instead of blind allegiance, Hardy views Harry’s focus through a much colder, pragmatic lens.
“He’s hyper-focused on something that is innate specifically to him, and yes, it looks like loyalty for sure,” Hardy revealed. “But a pirate is only loyal to one thing.”
With Conrad slowly unraveling and the family’s criminal web pulling in his daughter Gina, Hardy teased that Harry’s true internal ethical framework will take precedence over any vows made to the Harrigan crime dynasty.
