In HBO’s DC series Lanterns, the idyllic exterior of a small American town conceals a calculated conspiracy that is orchestrated by an ancient, disguised android fighting for self-preservation.
Lanterns Reimagined DC’s Classic Robotic Villains as a Sympathetic Survivor
While comic book lore traditionally portrays the Manhunters as cold, emotionless android precursors to the Green Lantern Corps, Lanterns reimagines the entity through Poorna Jagannathan‘s character, Zoe.
Zoe is not just blending into humanity, but she is also the sole surviving Manhunter in existence. To protect herself from discovery, she established a network of mutual survival that binds every resident to her defense.
During an interview with Collider, Jagannathan pushed back against labeling her character as a conventional villain, highlighting how her drive to stay alive reshaped the entire community.
“She’s extraordinarily sympathetic, a character who is a victim of so many things, including just her own programming,” Jagannathan explained. “The contract that she makes with Sheriff Cain, Kelly’s character, is: ‘I did this for you because down the line I might need something from you, someone who’s willing to go the distance for me.’
“And there’s a real feeling she’s made that contract with every single person in that town, which is why they go so hard to protect her and fight for her.”
According to showrunner Chris Mundy, this calculated dynamic gives the ancient machine an entirely new emotional weight.
Having adopted different forms across lifetimes, Zoe operates with genuine human feelings while remaining locked into an overriding survival instinct that supersedes all else. When Hal Jordan and John Stewart arrive to investigate, the residents aren’t merely obeying a sinister force, they are actively repaying personal debts owed to the entity that saved them.
That web of unspoken loyalty transforms the entire community into Zoe’s frontline defense, creating an escalating conflict where uncovering the truth threatens to dismantle the safety of everyone who made a pact with her.
Lanterns Season 1 is currently streaming on HBO, with episode 6 set to release on September 20.
