Mahershala Ali just walked away from one of the most acclaimed performances of his career in Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother, and he is already lining up a role that could test him in an entirely different way. His next stop is HBO’s “Task,” and the follow-up is shaping up to be far from a quiet one.
Mahershala Ali Confirms There’s “Some Physical Work” Involved in Task S2
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Ali was asked directly whether his Task season 2 character would be handling a weapon. He danced around specifics but confirmed the role has a hands-on component he is still working through.
“There is, there’s some physical work in that as well. It’s challenging in a very different way, but I’m getting through it,” he said.
Ali is joining the HBO crime drama as Eddie Barnes, a veteran DEA agent in Philadelphia whose team clashes with the task force led by Mark Ruffalo‘s Tom Brandis, per the show’s official logline. He is the first major cast addition confirmed for season 2, joining returning lead Ruffalo in a season that finds Brandis running a new unit where, as HBO describes it, it becomes increasingly hard to tell who the real target is.
Ali also praised Task creator Brad Ingelsby directly, crediting him for handing him a project that felt like a natural next step in his career.
“Brad is an extraordinary writer and creative, and all involved are just wonderful people, and so I’m very grateful to be able to follow this up with something of that ilk. It’s kind of a dream come true.”
The show marks Ali’s return to HBO seven years after starring in True Detective season 3, a performance that earned him an Emmy nomination, and continues Ingelsby’s run of Philadelphia-set crime dramas following the acclaimed “Mare of Easttown.”
Season 1 of Task premiered in September 2025 and followed Ruffalo’s Brandis as he pursued Tom Pelphrey‘s Robbie Prendergrast, a garbage truck driver moonlighting as a robbery crew chief targeting drug stash houses tied to a biker gang.
A premiere date for season 2 has not yet been announced yet.
