Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are covering Archie and Lilibet’s UK school fees entirely out of pocket, with no financial help from King Charles as the family resettles in Britain after six years in Montecito. Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, have already been enrolled at schools near the couple’s new private residence outside London, with terms starting this September.
Estimates for two children at a top day school in the Cotswolds could run well into the tens of thousands of pounds a year.
According to Melanie Sanderson, managing editor of The Good Schools Guide, the Sussexes are looking at a wide range depending on which route they take.
“The Sussexes could be looking at fees ranging from about £28,000 a year at the smaller, more basic country prep schools, to upwards of £50,000 for two children attending a top day school in the Cotswolds.”
School fees are just one line item in a resettlement bill that also includes round-the-clock private security, a new Cotswolds home, and upkeep on the nine-bedroom Montecito mansion the couple is keeping.
The school fees arrive alongside a much larger financial headache for the couple. Harry is facing a potential £34.5 million legal bill from his failed privacy case against the publisher of the Daily Mail, with an estimated £18 million shortfall beyond what his insurance covers.
That combination of costs is reportedly pushing the Sussexes toward leaning harder on their streaming and production deals to keep everything afloat while they settle into life back in Britain.
