Jacob calling Uncle Monty for help was supposed to be the smart move. Instead, it turned into the worst decision he’s made all season.
Reacher season 4 episode 6, “Plum Out of Luck,” finally answers the question of whether Jacob has anyone left he can trust outside of Reacher and Tamara. After escaping the hospital with a bullet-wounded Russell Plum in tow, Jacob calls the one person he thinks is still safe.
Monty agrees to pick him up. But instead pf saving him, he hands him straight to the Philadelphia police instead.
Monty Was Never on Jacob’s Side
The betrayal lands harder than any of the season’s mercenary attacks because Monty was supposed to be family. He isn’t a stranger like Lila or Amisha, and he isn’t a paid gun working for whoever is behind the photograph on Anna’s drive.
He’s the man Jacob has leaned on since his sister Anna died, and the show spent episode 5 setting up exactly how much trust Jacob had placed in him.
That trust was misplaced from the start. Monty had already struck a deal with the Philadelphia PD chief before Jacob ever called him, with the real goal being to pull Jacob off the streets and clear the way to get at Reacher, who Monty sees as the actual source of the chaos.
When Detective Shaun Docherty shows up to make the arrest, Monty realizes almost immediately that he miscalculated. Docherty doesn’t treat Jacob like a routine collar. He treats him like a target.

Docherty’s Hesitation Is Jacob’s Only Lifeline
Docherty was supposed to take Jacob to the station. He doesn’t stop there, and Jacob quickly puts together that he’s being driven somewhere to be killed rather than booked. He calls out Docherty’s financial ties to Tamara directly, appealing to whatever is left of the cop’s conscience rather than his badge.
It works, at least partially. Docherty is clearly a man on someone else’s payroll, but he’s also visibly conflicted about executing a fellow officer for money. That hesitation is the only thing standing between Jacob and a body bag right now, and it’s the detail that matters most heading into episode 7.
Jacob’s arc this season has never been about competence. He’s grieving, sleep-deprived, and driven by a need for vengeance that keeps landing him in worse situations than the one before, and the Monty call fits that pattern perfectly.
The stakes of this betrayal go beyond one bad phone call, though. It confirms that whoever wants the photograph buried has resources reaching into local law enforcement, and it strips Jacob of the last adult in his life he thought he could fall back on without a fight.
That leaves Jacob more isolated than at any point since Anna’s death, with only a wavering hitman-cop between him and the people hunting him. Reacher season 4 episode 7, “Vote for Sampson,” arrives September 9 on Prime Video.
