Lioness Season 3, Episode 4, titled “Murder Hornets”, opens with Joe McNamara strapped down in a vacant Baltimore warehouse, and she is already thinking three steps ahead of her captors.
Renat subjects Joe to a relentless water-drip torture technique while lecturing her about American weakness. Joe answers with contempt rather than fear, but beneath the defiance, she is running a plan that has nothing to do with talking her way out.
That plan is forensic. While restrained and being physically brutalized, Joe deliberately cuts her forehead against the restraint and moves her head to leave blood behind in the holding room.
It looks like an incidental byproduct of torture to anyone watching Renat’s interrogation. It is actually a message written for the one audience that matters: the Lioness team that will eventually breach this location in search of her.
Why Joe Chooses to Bleed in Lioness Season 3 Episode 4
Joe’s tracker has already been torn out of her body, so the usual method of locating a captured CIA officer is gone before “Murder Hornets” even starts. Blood is the only tool left within reach, and Joe treats it as she treats every other resource in the field: as something to be used with intent.
Smearing it deliberately rather than letting it fall randomly turns an act of violence against her into confirmation of her presence for whoever comes looking.
The show frames this as vintage Joe rather than desperation. She compliments Renat on his technique mid torture and practically dares him to escalate, denying him the reaction he wants while her hands do the real work. It is the kind of elite tradecraft the series has built her character around since season one, the instinct to convert helplessness into a controlled variable.

The Hangar Raid That Almost Works
The Lioness team, working off Oleksandra’s earlier debriefing and fresh intelligence, eventually breaches the Baltimore hangar where Joe was held. They arrive after Renat has already forced her onto a plane with its transponder switched off. What they find instead of Joe is the room where she was tortured, along with the blood she left behind, confirming she had been there.
That confirmation comes at a cost. Kyle McManus, out of patience and out of conventional options, kills one of the captured Russians left behind and uses the execution to terrify the surviving man into giving up the aircraft’s tail number.
It is a brutal pivot for a show that has spent three seasons showing what happens when institutional rules stop protecting the people operating outside them.
Joe’s improvised forensic trail does not get her rescued by the end of the episode, but it does exactly what she needed it to do. It proves she survived the hangar, narrows the search, and buys her team the only thing they have left, which is time.
“The world didn’t become this way; it’s always been this way,” says Joe early early in the episode, but it doubles as the thesis for everything Joe does afterward.
She has never expected the system to save her cleanly, so she builds her own rescue plan from whatever the room gives her. With Washington facing a 36-hour window before Joe’s plane can cross into territory the CIA cannot touch, that improvised blood trail may end up being the only real head start her team gets.
