Two episodes into Lanterns, the biggest mystery isn’t the alien threat haunting Rushville, Nebraska. It’s the sheriff investigating it.
Kelly Macdonald’s Sheriff Kerry Kane was introduced as a small-town lawwoman with more grit than her badge suggests, and episode 2 finally explained why. She isn’t from Rushville at all. She’s from Gotham City, and that single reveal has cracked open one of the DCU’s most intriguing threads yet.
Kerry’s competence made sense the moment her Gotham background surfaced. She has kept pace with John Stewart and Hal Jordan without flinching, which reads very differently for a sheriff who spent years navigating Gotham’s particular brand of chaos. That history alone would be enough to raise eyebrows. Her last name is what turned a character detail into a full-blown DCU theory.
Why Kerry Kane’s Surname Is a Major DCU Clue
In the comics, Kane is not a throwaway surname in Gotham City. Martha Kane, Bruce Wayne’s mother, carried it before she married Thomas Wayne, and her niece Kate Kane later became Batwoman. A sheriff named Kerry Kane, freshly confirmed as a Gotham transplant, is unlikely to escape comparisons to the influential Kane family.
Portuguese DC fan page Caverna do Morcego was among the first to lay out the connection on social media, pointing directly to the family tree.
“Her full name is Kerry Kane. The Kane family is one of the most influential in Gotham. Bruce Wayne’s mother was a Kane.”
Whether Kerry is meant to evoke Kate Kane specifically, or simply signal that the Bat-Family already exists somewhere off-screen in this universe, the effect is the same. It gives the DCU a way to plant Gotham roots in Lanterns without needing a Batman actor, a Batman budget, or a release date anywhere close.

The Barbara Gordon Phone Call, Explained
Kerry’s Gotham ties don’t stop at her surname. In the Lanterns premiere, she is overheard on a phone call telling someone to “tell Barb I said hey,” a line addressed to a police commissioner on the other end. That detail sent DC readers straight to Barbara Gordon, and by extension, her father, Commissioner Jim Gordon.
If Kerry has a working relationship with a Gotham police commissioner casual enough to trade hellos with his daughter, it suggests she didn’t just live in Gotham. She served there, likely inside the GCPD itself, putting her within arm’s reach of Gordon’s orbit well before Rushville ever entered the picture.
Stack that alongside the Kane surname and a poster for Janus Cosmetics that has separately drawn Black Mask comparisons, and Lanterns starts to look like it’s quietly seeding Gotham City infrastructure a full universe away from any confirmed Batman project.
With Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II pushed to 2028 and The Brave and the Bold not expected before 2029, the DCU needed a way to keep Gotham present without rushing a new Batman to the screen. Sheriff Kerry Kane may be exactly that bridge, built quietly through a small-town murder investigation nobody expected to double as Bat-Family lore.
