Four episodes of buildup. Four episodes of almost moments, first names in libraries, excuses to meet up, bangs cut for a boy who has not said the thing yet. You and I Are Polar Opposites Episode 5 finally breaks the deadlock, and the person who breaks it is not who anyone expected.
Yamada Overthought His Way Out of Another Confession
Episode 5 opens exactly where this show keeps landing with Yamada. The opportunity was there. He did all the preparation in his head, ran every possible scenario, considered every angle, and then did absolutely nothing with any of it. At this point, Yamada’s internal confession process has become its own running joke, and the show knows it.
So he calls Nishi instead. Asks if she can come meet him. She had already eaten dinner and was in her pajamas, and told him she could not make it today, but suggested another time. Yamada agrees. Then blushes about a phone call. This man is down terribly, and it is extremely endearing.
When they finally do meet, Nishi shows up in a new dress she had recently bought. Yamada tells her she looks really cute in it. Nishi immediately turns into a full-blown tomato. These two have developed a dynamic over five episodes that has become genuinely difficult to watch without smiling about it, because everything they do around each other is so visibly charged with something neither of them has yet named.
They go to a restaurant. Share a meal. Yamada watches Nishi eat and, as the internal monologue goes, finds it completely captivating. Then his mouth does the thing it keeps doing around her, and instead of saying she looks cute, he essentially says he could watch her forever.
Nishi’s immediate assumption is that he thinks she is a big eater.
She is so far from the right answer and so genuinely confident in the wrong one that the scene becomes the funniest moment of the episode before it becomes the most important one.
Then Nishi confesses.
Not Yamada. Nishi. The girl who cut her bangs so he could see her eyes, who admitted she needed an excuse to meet up, who has been quietly doing everything except saying the actual sentence out loud, she got there first.
You and I Are Polar Opposites, Season 2, Episode 5 earns this moment completely because it does not treat it as a twist. It treats it as the logical conclusion of who Nishi is. She is not the louder one in this dynamic. But she is the one who acts on what she feels when the moment is actually in front of her, which is more than can be said for Yamada, who has had the moment in front of him approximately four times this season alone.
Yamada having to sit with the fact that she beat him to it is its own kind of perfect ending to this particular chapter of their story.
Taira Gets a Piece of Gum and His Brain Immediately Malfunctions
The B-plot this week belongs to Taira, and it is doing exactly what You and I Are Polar Opposites does best with him. Azuma gives him a piece of gum. Just a piece of gum. And Taira spends the rest of his screen time this episode wondering if he is supposed to give something back, what the appropriate return gesture would be, whether not giving something back means something, and whether giving something back means something else entirely.
One piece of gum. This boy is running a full diplomatic analysis on one piece of gum.
After last week’s hailstorm and the small smile that said more than he ever has out loud, this is the show pulling him back to where he actually is, which is still very much at the beginning of figuring any of this out. The gap between realizing you misread someone and knowing what to do with that realization is apparently a piece of gum wide, and Taira is stuck right in the middle of it.
Tani and Suzuki continue being the established couple this ensemble uses as its emotional anchor. They are still adorable. The show does not need to do much with them this week, since the other two storylines carry everything, but their presence grounds the episode in the warmth that makes this series worth coming back to every week.
You and I Are Polar Opposites Episode 5 is the payoff episode this season has been building toward, and it sticks the landing by giving it to the character who deserved it most. Yamada had every chance. Nishi took one.
