For a character who barely shows his face, Beyond Netero has quietly become one of the most important figures in Hunter x Hunter. Every time the manga returns from hiatus, another layer of his plan gets peeled back, and none of it looks like what fans originally assumed.

The name alone was a tease. Beyond Netero is the son of Isaac Netero, the beloved and terrifying 12th Chairman of the Hunter Association, and that connection was kept buried within the organization for years. His story only makes sense once you go back decades, to a mission that never should have been forgotten.

Beyond Netero’s Dark Continent Mission Explained

Around 50 years before the current story, the V5 put Beyond in charge of a covert expedition into the Dark Continent, where his team secured the rare alchemical plant Metallion through an unexplored route. It should have been a triumph.

Instead, an unknown disease wiped out much of the team on the return trip, and the plant itself died before it could be studied, turning the entire mission into an official failure.

That failure had consequences that outlived the mission itself. Isaac Netero responded by barring his son from ever returning to the Dark Continent for as long as he lived, effectively putting Beyond’s ambitions on ice. Rather than let go of them, Beyond spent that time building a new path forward, one that didn’t need his father’s permission.

He found it in the Kakin Empire. Beyond forged an alliance with Nasubi Hui Guo Rou, the empire’s ruler, and once Isaac Netero finally passed away, he had Nasubi publicly announce a new Dark Continent expedition open to the world.

Behind the scenes, he wasn’t working alone either. Multiple accounts point to Beyond keeping close contact with Pariston Hill throughout the Hunter Association’s chairman election, using that connection to stack the deck in his favor long before the expedition ever set sail.

Beyond Netero’s Bloodline Plot in the Kakin Royal Family

The real gut punch came with the reveal of just how far Beyond was willing to go to control that expedition. Chapter 401 exposed that Beyond has dozens of children, all conceived for the sole purpose of helping him seize power.

The method behind it is brutal in its precision. Every time a new Kakin prince was born, Beyond fathered a child with a different woman, exposed that infant to Nen from birth, and pressured Kakin soldiers into raising each child alongside their mother.

The exact number of children is never confirmed, but the pattern suggests it’s sizable, potentially one for every prince born over three decades. One of those children, Longhi, confirmed the truth of it directly to Kurapika, backed by the undeniable pull of his Dowsing Chain.

The endgame appears just as cold. Everything points to Beyond wanting just one of his children on the Kakin throne, meaning the rest were never meant to survive the process. Every prince born into that royal family was never just a rival heir. Each one may be a pawn Beyond planted decades in advance.

What ties it all together is surprisingly simple. Beyond isn’t chasing gold or a crown for its own sake. What he wants is to explore territory no one else has touched and meet people no one else has found, and the Dark Continent is where he believes he can finally do that on his own terms.

The Kakin throne was never the destination, just the vehicle to get there without his father, the Hunter Association, or anyone else standing in his way.

That reframes everything the Succession Contest Arc put the royal family through. Every dead prince, every betrayal, every twist in that bloody arc traces back to one man’s decades-old grudge against a single failed mission. With Togashi’s hiatuses making each new chapter feel like an event, fans are watching Beyond’s endgame arrive in real time, one devastating reveal at a time.
