J.K. Simmons has confirmed that he will not return as J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. His comments end months of speculation about whether the character would appear in Tom Holland’s fourth standalone ‘Spider-Man’ film, which is set to release on July 31, 2026.

Rumors of Simmons’ return had circulated since 2025 and were widely repeated by entertainment outlets and fan communities. His statement is the first direct confirmation from the actor that Jameson is not part of the film, settling one of the most persistent casting rumors surrounding Marvel and Sony’s next ‘Spider-Man’ release.

While promoting his MGM+ series ‘Westies,’ Simmons addressed the reports during an interview with ComicBook.com. Asked about his involvement in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, he dismissed the rumor with a direct response.

“Not in it, dude. I don’t know who on the internet decided that that was a fact, but I ain’t in it,” he said.

Simmons first stepped into the role of J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s original ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy, spanning 2002 to 2007. His take on the character became so iconic that Sony opted to leave Jameson out of both ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ films entirely rather than hand the role to someone else.

When Marvel Studios eventually brought Jameson back, they reimagined him as the loudmouth host of TheDailyBugle.net, swapping the classic newspaper editor for an online broadcaster while preserving his signature disdain for Spider-Man. That move made Simmons the only actor to play the same Spider-Man character across separate live-action continuities.

His absence from Spider-Man: Brand New Day also lines up with where Spider-Man: No Way Home left things. Peter Parker lost his friends, his public identity, and his entire support system once Doctor Strange’s spell wiped him from everyone’s memory.

Details from production and remarks from Tom Holland point to a grounded, street-level story featuring characters like Tombstone, Shocker, and police captain Jean DeWolff. Keeping Jameson out of the picture keeps the film focused on Peter’s new reality rather than bringing in familiar faces from his past.
