Bleach: The Calamity Episode 2 picks up exactly where last week left off. Askin is still standing. Kisuke is still kneeling. And somehow things are about to get significantly worse before the most satisfying turn of the entire arc.
The episode opens with a small flashback. Orihime is standing in what looks like Karakura High’s botanical garden, comparing a bright red flower to Ichigo. Tatsuki walks in and immediately corrects her, pointing to the orange ones as the better comparison.
Orihime clarifies she was talking about his heart, not his hair. Then it cuts back to Ichigo and Orihime climbing the staircase toward Yhwach, and Ichigo actually asks her for help rather than telling her to stay back. That detail matters more than the episode lets on.
Askin Explains His Cheat Code and Kisuke Stops Listening
Back to the main event. Askin does what every smart villain does and explains exactly how he pulled it off. Yoruichi’s 48 spiritual pressure variations per minute were impressive, and also his entire solution. Survive one minute, and he catalogs all 48.
That is what Hess Hein does. His Vollstandig specializes in adaptability, reacting to changes in whatever he designates as poison and building immunity for every variation as long as the base remains the same. Derivatives, mutations, combinations, all of it gets analyzed automatically.
On top of that, Kisuke is already trapped inside a Gift Ball Deluxe, being slowly poisoned inside an inescapable Bereich. The situation is genuinely impossible, and Bleach: The Calamity wants you to sit in that before it gives you the release.
Kisuke mentions he never took Askin for the loyal type. Askin basically agrees and explains that his actual motivation is curiosity. He wants to see what exists beyond the destruction of the Three Worlds. Yhwach’s plan to build something new over the wreckage of everything that currently exists fascinates him. He tries to appeal to Kisuke’s inner scientist and asks if he is not curious.
Kisuke answers with a slash of Benihime. He is not curious. A true scientist only cares about their own creations, not someone else’s. Mayuri might have found it interesting. He does not.
Askin responds by instantly destroying Kisuke’s eyes with a Gift Ring. The situation goes from impossible to catastrophic in about four seconds.
Kannon-Biraki Benihime Aratame Arrives and Askin Stops Smiling
Then, the words the entire fanbase has been waiting for since this arc began.
A shadowy figure emerges from behind a black veil and resolves into something that looks remarkably like Unohana from the earliest Bleach chapters. Massive, doll-like, completely calm. This is Kisuke’s legendary Bankai, and Bleach: The Calamity Episode 2 gives it exactly the entrance it deserves.
Askin’s arm gets torn apart immediately. He retreats in genuine panic, which for this character is almost funnier than anything else the episode does. The doll moves to Kisuke and reconstructs his eyes on the spot. Fixes them completely. Like the Gift Ring never happened. Askin’s “no way” reaction lands because Askin does not panic. Watching him panic is new information about how serious this just got.
Kisuke explains the core concept. Kannon-Biraki Benihime Aratame reconstructs and modifies everything. His own body, the surrounding environment, the battlefield itself. He cannot move freely, but the Bankai builds a road of stitches for him, and suddenly, Askin’s entire toolkit has nothing to push against.
Gift Balls keep coming. Kisuke dodges all of them. Then an arm punches through Askin’s chest and pulls his heart out.
Grimmjow. Kisuke modified the Gift Bereich with his Bankai. The prison blocked exits. Nobody said anything about entrances. Once again, the smartest person in the room wins by thinking about the room differently than everyone else. It is such a clean piece of writing that it almost feels unfair.
Askin is still talking with a crushed heart, which tracks perfectly for this character, and it gives Kisuke the space to deliver what has become one of his most-quoted lines across the entire franchise. A fight means you die if you lose. Everyone prepares for death to avoid it. Prepared for every outcome, including this one.
Then the Gift Ball Deluxe activates on Askin’s death, threatening to take both Kisuke and Grimmjow with him. Both collapse. Bankai fading. Nelliel appears outside the prison, finds the opening Kisuke had already calculated would exist, and closes the chapter on one of the better villains this arc produced. Goodbye Askin. You were genuinely fun.
On the other side of the episode, Ishida is still failing to put Jugram down, and Bleach: The Calamity Episode 2 does something genuinely interesting with it. Jugram’s eyes shift from multiple red irises to multiple blue ones mid-fight, implying he may no longer be borrowing the Almighty from Yhwach but has developed his own version.
The anime original material surrounding Jugram this cour has added real weight to an encounter that the manga moved through too quickly, and the eye shift is the most interesting single detail the show has introduced so far.
Ichigo and Orihime reach Yhwach’s throne room. Yhwach calls Ichigo his son in the darkness. Ichigo tells him exactly what he is, his mother’s killer. Yhwach explains that killing Masaki was necessary. Ichigo stops thinking and charges. Orihime cannot maintain her defensive field around someone moving that erratically, and the opening costs him immediately. Yhwach overwhelms him with black Soul King energy, and the episode ends on another cliffhanger.
The next episode preview quote comes from Toshiro, suggesting the Gerard fight gets some attention alongside whatever happens next between Ichigo and Yhwach. Bleach: The Calamity Episode 2 is the strongest episode of the cour so far. The Kisuke section alone makes it worth a rewatch.
