Kisuke Urahara losing his eyes should have ended his fight against Askin Nakk Le Vaar on the spot. Instead, in The Calamity episode 2, it became the moment his Bankai finally showed fans what it actually does.
For over a decade, Bleach fans speculated about what Urahara’s Bankai might look like. He is a former Squad 12 captain and the founder of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, so expectations were enormous.
When the reveal finally landed in The Calamity, the final cour of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, it wasn’t about raw power. It was about control down to the cellular level, and that is exactly what saved him.
What Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame Actually Does
Urahara’s Bankai, Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame, manifests as a towering, stitched crimson figure resembling a woman with braided hair looped atop her head.
The fundamental power of the Bankai lies in its ability to restructure anything, and this restructuring manifests in two distinct ways: through dissection and reconstruction.
Used offensively, it can dissect a target with surgical precision. But its supportive side is just as impressive, since, through reconstruction, it can repair and enhance anything it touches, with the process visualized by mystical stitches appearing on whatever is modified. That second half of the ability is what mattered most when Urahara found himself blind in the middle of a fight for his life.
Why His Eyes Got Fixed Mid-Battle
The setup happens in chapter 664 of the manga, adapted for anime in The Calamity episode 2. Backed into a corner by Sternritter Askin Nakk Le Vaar’s lethal Deathdealing ability, Urahara’s situation looked dire, and Askin’s Gift Ring completely destroyed his eyes, leaving him effectively blind.
Rather than fighting blind or retreating, Urahara activated his Bankai and immediately turned its reconstruction ability on himself. The first thing he does upon releasing Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame is suture his eyes back together, after which he redesigns his hand to augment its physical strength. The stitching motif isn’t just visual flair. It represents the Bankai literally reconnecting torn tissue and restoring function in real time.
This is why fans consider the ability one of the most broken tools in the entire series. Urahara’s restructuring isn’t limited to healing or restoring; it can also enhance any body part to optimal working order, meaning the same power that fixed his vision could also make his limbs stronger mid-fight.
Against an opponent as fast as Askin, that dual function of instant repair and instant upgrade is what lets Urahara survive a fight he had no business winning.
It also reframes Urahara’s entire arc in the war. He spent years building tools for Soul Society from the shadows, and his own Bankai, The Calamity, turned out to be an extension of that same philosophy: fix what’s broken, then make it better than before.
