Mark Wahlberg is opening up about one of the most unsettling sequences in By Any Means, and it centers on a routine traffic stop that nearly breaks his character, Wayne. The moment relies on Sasha Penn’s script balancing genuine fear with a flash of dark humor, with Wahlberg explaining how a single line of dialogue keeps the scene from tipping into pure dread.
Mark Wahlberg Breaks Down Wayne’s Traffic Stop Scene
In a new interview with Trey Mangum, Wahlberg detailed how he and the filmmakers found room for a joke inside one of the film’s most frightening moments.
“I think about the traffic stop when Wayne is in the front seat and he’s very, very tense, and then the officer asks him where he’s from, and Wayne quips, ‘New Jersey.'”
Wahlberg said that flash of humor does real work inside a scene built on Wayne’s fear, giving the audience a brief release without undercutting the stakes.
“That’s a very fine line, to be able to play that and deliver the laugh without taking you out of the seriousness of the situation and Wayne’s absolute fear.”
He credited Penn’s script for making that balance possible in the first place, calling it powerful and emotionally resonant material that required little embellishment to land.
Wahlberg also described his process for building out Wayne beyond what was on the page, saying he tends to get deep enough into a character that he starts pulling ideas from earlier drafts of the script.
“I’m always one to get so into the character that I usually find a lot to improvise. I remember finding a lot of stuff in other drafts as we were working on the script that I said, ‘No, no, no, we have to have this.’ I would tape it to my script and scribble it back in.”
He said that habit came from how dense and well-written Penn’s script already was, which made him want to protect as much of it as possible through the editing process.
“It’s better to have the material than not have it. So I was constantly adding other things and trying other things.”
That willingness to keep pulling from the script’s earlier drafts, Wahlberg said, is part of what drew such strong talent to the project in the first place.
