Azuma said she would not give up. Taira basically admitted he likes her back and then talked himself out of it in real time.
Episode 9 of You and I Are Polar Opposites Season 2 is the Tairazuma episode the whole season has been building toward and it delivers everything it promised including the part where it hurts.
Two Sides of the Same Coin Who Cannot Figure That Out

Azuma started this episode giddy. She ended it with tears in her eyes. That distance between the beginning and the end of her screen time this week is the whole emotional arc of episode 9 compressed into one character’s face.
The moment she said she would not give up is the one the fandom has been rewinding. After everything this season has shown about how much patience it takes to get through to Taira, watching Azuma consciously choose to keep going anyway rather than protect herself is the kind of character moment that earns every slow episode that came before it.
Her kindness has been pulling him out of a very specific kind of darkness all season and she knows that and she is not walking away from it.
Taira on the other hand is doing what Taira does, which is taking a completely normal human feeling and psychoanalyzing it into something almost unrecognizable. His conclusion that his feelings for Azuma might be rooted in narcissism and self-love is the most Taira thing this show has ever produced.
Explained: The Honda Scene in ‘You and I are Polar Opposites’ Episode 5
The logic goes that she makes him feel good about himself, which is what his past relationship with the blonde girl did too, and that relationship turned out to be hollow once it ended. He does not want to do that to Azuma. He does not want to bring fake feelings into something real. So he is holding himself back not because he does not like her but because he likes her too much to risk getting it wrong.
That is so completely backward and so completely human and the show knows exactly what it is doing with it. What Taira cannot see is that analyzing whether his feelings are genuine to this degree already proves they are. You do not think that hard about someone you do not actually care about.
The title lying to the audience is the observation that landed hardest in the threads after the episode. Tairazuma are not polar opposites. They are the same person with different exteriors.
Both overthink everything. Both sabotage themselves before anyone else gets the chance. Both care so much about the other person that the caring becomes the obstacle. The show has been building that parallel all season and episode 9 is where it becomes impossible to ignore.
His past relationship doing the framing work here is genuinely smart writing. The blonde girl gave him attention and admiration and he was happy, but when it ended he realized he had not felt anything for her as a person. He felt good because of how she made him feel.
Taira is now terrified that the same thing is happening with Azuma and the terrifying part is that his fear is not completely unreasonable. Wanting someone to lift you up and make you feel better about yourself is a real thing that happens in relationships and it is not inherently love. Taira is not wrong to examine it.
He is just wrong about what the examination means. The fact that he is asking the question at all, the fact that he is worried about whether his feelings are genuine because he does not want to hurt her, is the answer he cannot see yet.
Peak yearning from Azuma. Peak psychological spiral from Taira. These two still have a long way to go and that is exactly why this show is so good right now.
