Kevin Feige doesn’t throw that title around.
Marvel Studios has spent close to two decades turning performers into icons, but when its president was asked point blank who he’d call the finest actor working today, he didn’t hedge. He was talking about the man currently stepping into a mask that has broken every actor who’s tried it before him. That man is Robert Downey Jr.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Feige tackled the question that’s followed Avengers: Doomsday since it was announced: why trust the villain role to an actor so identified with a hero.
“He’s the greatest actor of his time and he can pull off anything,” the Marvel boss declared.
Doctor Doom has a rough history on screen, with Empire pointing out that the character “has never been done right.” The line carries weight given Julian McMahon’s forgettable 2005 turn and years of scrapped attempts to crack Victor Von Doom for film. Feige called it a genuine challenge for himself, the Russo brothers, and Downey alike.
What changed his mind wasn’t a pitch meeting. According to Feige, Downey “found something fairly quickly” once he sat with the character, landing on an interpretation the studio didn’t have to force.

Avengers: Doomsday isn’t a small showcase for that performance either. The film pulls together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men into one ensemble, with Doom positioned as the connective threat across all three teams.
The cast around him is stacked. Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach lead the Avengers and Fantastic Four side, while Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn bring the X-Men into the fold.
Marvel hasn’t said what Doom actually wants yet, or how he plans to turn three separate franchises against each other. But Feige clearly isn’t worried about who’s carrying that weight. He’s already handed Downey the highest praise a studio boss can give an actor, and come December, he’s betting the whole Multiverse Saga on it.
