Dark Matter Season 2 opens with a body count that would make any coroner nervous, and the man now in charge of sorting it out isn’t who anyone expects.
Agent Mitchel MacNamara, played by Chris Diamantopoulos, walks into the makeshift morgue as Chicago police wheel in yet another dead Jason Dessen. He takes the case off the local detectives’ hands almost immediately, and they don’t put up much of a fight.
However, MacNamara isn’t a cop. He isn’t FBI either. When the surviving Jason in custody assumes otherwise, MacNamara corrects him fast, admitting he normally works out of black sites, the kind of off-the-books facility associated with the CIA. That detail alone tells us this investigation was never going to follow normal rules.

MacNamara’s theory for why over a dozen identical bodies just showed up in one city is where things get messy. He’s convinced this is the work of a foreign adversary, some kind of cloning operation unleashed on American soil.
It’s a reasonable guess for anyone who doesn’t know about the Box, Jason 2’s multiverse-hopping invention, but it puts him on entirely the wrong track. He has no idea he’s investigating alternate versions of the same man rather than a covert cell of engineered operatives.
That misunderstanding doesn’t make him any less dangerous. MacNamara makes it clear he’s holding at least one other Jason already, and he’s not shy about threatening an involuntary autopsy for whichever version proves least useful. Faced with that ultimatum, the surviving Jason agrees to help him track down the Jason responsible for starting the chaos in the first place.
A quick flashback fills in why he’s so willing to cooperate. This is the same Jason who held Jason 2 hostage back in Season 1, Episode 9, and beat him badly in the process. There’s clearly no loyalty left between them, so throwing Jason 2 under the bus isn’t a hard call.
MacNamara’s arrival sets up one of Season 2’s central mysteries early. He’s not just a procedural obstacle for the Dessens to dodge. He’s an outsider stumbling toward the truth from the wrong angle, armed with resources and a willingness to cut people open to get answers.
Whether he figures out what’s really going on before the Jasons close ranks against him is shaping up to be one of the season’s bigger threads to watch.
