Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man film roadmap has been transformed as the studio moves away from making movies about villains to creating projects around various Spider-variants. This plan is already well underway, with specific themes guiding every new project under Sony’s umbrella, including Spider-Noir that is scheduled to premiere on May 25, 2026.
While Sony has said this approach will govern future productions in both movies and TV shows, the Spider-Noir will be one of several in the studio’s current projects. Unlike other Spider-Man movies, such as Morbius or Madame Web, the genre-first strategy aims to craft stories by mixing the hero element with popular film genres including noir, punk, or coming-of-age tales.
A genre-first strategy starts with ‘Spider-Noir’
Among many projects currently in development by the studio is the upcoming live-action show called Spider-Noir set in 1930s New York during the Great Depression period. This TV show is completely committed to the noir detective fiction format and starring Nicolas Cage in the role of the older, tired Spider-variant, who is an investigator named P.I. Spider-Man. This TV show debuts worldwide on Prime Video on May 27, 2026, after an initial US premiere on MGM+.
Alongside the mentioned TV show, there are additional projects under development. Spider-Woman is another animated project that aims to explore the world of female Spider-variants, with producers Amy Pascal and Avi Arad as one of the key creative players. As for the Spider-Verse characters, the animated spin-offs are in early development, and Hailee Steinfeld might reprise her role. Meanwhile, a new animated Venom movie will feature body horror and science fiction genres.
Under Sony’s plans, all those projects will be governed by the general artistic approach established by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who remain involved in overseeing these TV and animated spin-offs, although every project differs in genre specifics.
Sony’s shift in approach did not impact the company’s theatrical Spider-Man timeline. Tom Holland will star in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, releasing on July 31, 2026.
As for visual aspects, the Spider-Noir has two viewing formats available – black and white, and color. That being said, it looks like Sony is putting a special emphasis on visual side of its products.
